President Bola Tinubu is expected to intervene in the growing disagreement between Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, and governors of the All Progressives Congress ahead of the 2027 general elections.
According to a senior presidential aide familiar with the matter, Tinubu may engage both sides in an attempt to resolve the political differences. The reported intervention could take place while the President is in France.
The disagreement has largely centred on Wike’s political activities and his support for President Tinubu’s 2027 re-election bid while remaining a member of the opposition Peoples Democratic Party.
Wike has been promoting what he calls the Rainbow Coalition, a political arrangement involving politicians from different parties who support Tinubu’s presidential ambition. However, he has also maintained that his support for Tinubu does not mean he must support APC candidates in governorship and legislative elections.
The position has brought him into conflict with some APC governors. Among those Wike has criticised are Imo State Governor Hope Uzodimma and Kwara State Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq.
Uzodimma, who chairs the Progressive Governors’ Forum, has said APC governors would not support political arrangements that could weaken the party or undermine Tinubu’s re-election campaign. He stressed that the governors’ commitment was to APC candidates in the various elections.
Wike, however, has argued that politicians should be free to support Tinubu for president while backing candidates from other parties in state and legislative contests.
The disagreement has also generated concerns within the APC because Wike’s political network could influence contests involving governors and other political office holders.
Some APC figures have therefore called for the matter to be resolved before the disagreements become more damaging to the party’s preparations for 2027.
The APC South-East leadership has also criticised Wike’s recent comments about APC governors, describing his attacks as unacceptable and urging him to respect party structures and elected officials.
The reported intervention by Tinubu is therefore being viewed as an attempt to prevent the disagreement from developing into a wider political conflict ahead of the 2027 elections.
