In one of the biggest shocks of this season’s English football, fourth-tier Fleetwood Town eliminated Arsenal from the League Cup after winning 5–3 on penalties following a 1–1 draw in their last-16 encounter on Tuesday.
The result sent shockwaves through English football, as Fleetwood overcame one of the country’s biggest clubs to secure a place in the quarter-finals. Arsenal were reduced to 10 men during the match, adding to the difficulty of their attempt to progress in the competition. The Star
Fleetwood took the lead in the 21st minute through Aaron Loupalo-Bi, who beat Arsenal goalkeeper Illan Meslier with a finish from a tight angle. Arsenal responded five minutes after the interval when Viktor Gyökeres scored from close range to make it 1–1.
Arsenal pushed for a winner, but Fleetwood goalkeeper Jay Lynch made important saves to keep his team in the contest. The match became more difficult for Arsenal when teenage midfielder Max Dowman was sent off following an altercation with Fleetwood’s Harrison Neal.
With neither side able to find another goal, the tie went to a penalty shootout. Fleetwood converted all five of their attempts, while Lynch saved Bruno Guimarães’s penalty for Arsenal. Conor Haughey then converted the decisive kick to complete the upset.
The victory was particularly remarkable given the difference between the clubs’ positions in English football. Fleetwood compete in League Two, the fourth tier, while Arsenal are Premier League champions and had started the season strongly.
For Fleetwood, the result represents a memorable achievement for the club and its supporters. The team will discover its quarter-final opponent after the remaining fourth-round fixtures are completed.
Arsenal, meanwhile, must turn their attention back to their league campaign after missing the opportunity to advance in a competition that offers another route to silverware.
