Granit Xhaka and Breel Embolo Cleared to Return to Switzerland’s National Team

Switzerland captain Granit Xhaka and forward Breel Embolo will be eligible for national team selection again in November after completing proceedings relating to their use of forged COVID-19 vaccination certificates, the Swiss Football Association announced on Tuesday.

The decision means both players could return for Switzerland’s final two Nations League matches against Slovenia and Scotland next month. They were excluded from the squad during the September and October international windows following the revelations. Dikkasmedia

Xhaka, who plays for Sunderland in the English Premier League, admitted obtaining a fake vaccination certificate in 2022 to travel and compete. Embolo, who plays for Atlanta United, was also removed from the national team squad over a similar issue.

The Swiss Football Association said it reviewed the circumstances of both cases, the conclusion of the legal proceedings and the sporting consequences already imposed before deciding that the players could return.

Both players received suspended financial penalties of 150,000 Swiss francs, subject to a two-year probationary period. Xhaka apologised for his actions and described them as a mistake.

The association also confirmed that Xhaka would retain his position as Switzerland captain. The final decision on team selection and leadership remains with head coach Murat Yakin and the players involved.

Xhaka has made a record 152 appearances for Switzerland, making his potential return particularly significant as the national team prepares for its remaining Nations League fixtures. Switzerland currently lead their group with 12 points.

The team will travel to face Slovenia on November 13 before hosting Scotland on November 16. Both matches will be important as Switzerland seek to finish their group campaign strongly.

The decision brings the disciplinary matter to a new stage, allowing the coaching staff to consider both players again while maintaining the sanctions already imposed.
