Tinubu Launches 2027 Re-Election Campaign Amid Concerns Over Nigeria’s Cost of Living

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has officially launched his campaign for a second term, beginning his push for re-election at a rally in Kaduna on Saturday, October 24, as Nigeria prepares for the 2027 presidential election.

Addressing thousands of supporters, Tinubu defended his administration’s economic reforms and promised Nigerians a better future if re-elected. He argued that his government was working to improve the economy and blamed previous administrations and political opponents for some of the economic difficulties facing the country.

Since taking office in May 2023, Tinubu has introduced major economic measures, including the removal of petrol subsidies and changes to the foreign-exchange system. His administration has said these reforms are necessary to strengthen public finances, attract investment and establish a more sustainable economic foundation.

However, the measures have contributed to significant financial pressure on households and businesses. Higher petrol prices have increased transportation and operating costs, while many Nigerians continue to struggle with the prices of food and other essential goods. These challenges are expected to feature prominently in the election campaign.

Security is another major issue confronting the administration. Communities in several parts of the country continue to experience kidnappings, armed attacks and insurgency, prompting calls for more effective protection of lives and property.

Tinubu is expected to face challenges from prominent opposition figures, including former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and former Anambra State governor Peter Obi. Both politicians have previously attracted substantial support in presidential elections and are expected to make the administration’s economic and security record central to their campaigns.

The ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) will seek to defend its position by highlighting its policies, infrastructure projects and economic objectives. Opposition parties, meanwhile, are expected to present alternative proposals on governance, employment, security and the cost of living.

The presidential election is scheduled for January 2027. As campaigning develops, voters will have an opportunity to assess the candidates’ records, proposals and plans for addressing Nigeria’s most pressing challenges.
