Kwara 2027 Governorship Race Heats Up as APC and PDP Strengthen Campaigns

Political competition in Kwara State is intensifying ahead of Nigeria’s 2027 general elections, with the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) stepping up efforts to consolidate their support across the state.

A report published by Dikkasmedia on October 24 highlighted the growing contest for political influence as Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq approaches the end of his second term. Former Senate President Bukola Saraki, a leading figure in the state’s PDP, remains an important force in the opposition’s efforts to challenge the APC’s control.

The governorship contest is expected to feature APC candidate Salihu Yakubu-Danladi, the Speaker of the Kwara State House of Assembly, against PDP candidate Bolakale Kawu Agaka. Zakari Mohammed of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and Abdulmumin Ajia of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) are also seeking to compete for the position.

Within the APC, the selection of Danladi has generated disagreement among some party stakeholders. A group of aggrieved members reportedly opposed the outcome of the party’s primary, while some political figures have moved to the opposition. These internal divisions could become an important factor as the campaign progresses.

The PDP, meanwhile, is seeking to use the disagreements within the ruling party to strengthen its position. Its candidate, Agaka, has been consulting party stakeholders and visiting communities to present his campaign and seek support from voters.

The contest also has implications for the state’s senatorial politics. AbdulRazaq is seeking election to represent Kwara Central in the Senate after completing his governorship tenure, placing him in a separate contest against political opponents, including incumbent Senator Saliu Mustapha, who has moved to the PDP.

Beyond party loyalty, candidates are likely to face questions about security, employment, agriculture, education, healthcare and the cost of living. These issues affect residents across Kwara’s three senatorial districts and could influence how voters assess the competing parties.

As election preparations continue, the Kwara race is emerging as a test of the APC’s ability to manage internal disagreements and the opposition’s capacity to turn political dissatisfaction into electoral support.
