INEC Agrees to Publish Preliminary Voters’ Register Online Ahead of Nigeria’s 2027 Elections

Nigeria’s Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has agreed to make the preliminary register of voters available online following public calls for greater transparency ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The commission announced the decision on Monday, October 26, 2026, after concerns were raised by Nigerians and electoral stakeholders about access to the register. The move will allow registered voters and other interested parties to inspect the preliminary list digitally, in addition to the physical display previously conducted nationwide.

According to INEC, the preliminary register was physically displayed at registration areas across the country between October 9 and October 15, in accordance with Section 19 of the Electoral Act 2026. The exercise was intended to give registered voters an opportunity to verify their personal details and submit claims or objections where necessary.

However, calls for online access continued after the physical exercise ended. Responding to these concerns, the commission said it would upload the same preliminary register to its official online platform to broaden public access.

Voters can access the register through INEC’s designated website at [https://display.inecnigeria.org]. They are encouraged to check their details carefully and follow the commission’s procedures for raising concerns about errors or other irregularities.

The commission explained that it is still processing claims and objections arising from the verification exercise. The final register of voters is scheduled for certification and publication on December 15, 2026.

The development is significant because an accurate voters’ register is fundamental to the credibility of an election. Errors involving names, registration details or other information can create difficulties for voters and electoral officials if they are not identified and addressed before election day.

Making the register accessible online could also help citizens who were unable to visit designated registration areas during the physical display period. However, the effectiveness of the measure will depend on the accessibility of the platform and the procedures available for correcting identified errors.

INEC said the decision forms part of its commitment to transparency, accountability and public confidence in the electoral process as preparations continue for the 2027 elections.
