Atiku Abubakar Demands Public Access to Nigeria’s Voters’ Register Ahead of 2027 Elections

    ### Atiku Abubakar Demands Public Access to Nigeria’s Voters’ Register Ahead of 2027 Elections

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has renewed calls for the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to make Nigeria’s preliminary voters’ register publicly accessible, raising fresh questions about electoral transparency ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Atiku, a leading opposition figure in the African Democratic Congress (ADC), wants the commission to provide public access to the register, which reportedly contains more than 103 million registered voters. He argues that greater transparency would allow political parties, civil society organisations and eligible voters to identify errors and raise objections before election day.

The demand comes as preparations intensify for the presidential election scheduled for January 16, 2027. The voters’ register is a central component of the electoral process because it determines who is eligible to vote and helps election officials plan the distribution of polling facilities and other materials.

According to Channels Television’s October 23 report, the controversy centres on whether INEC provided the required public access to the preliminary register within the period prescribed by electoral law. Atiku has questioned the commission’s handling of the process, while INEC has maintained that physical display exercises were conducted and that corrections are being processed.

The dispute has not, by itself, established that the voters’ register has been manipulated. However, it highlights the importance of making electoral information available in ways that allow meaningful scrutiny before the final register is used.

Public verification can help identify duplicate entries, incorrect personal details and other administrative errors. It can also strengthen confidence in the electoral process by allowing political parties and citizens to raise concerns through established procedures.

INEC faces the challenge of completing preparations for the election while addressing questions about transparency, accuracy and compliance with electoral requirements. The commission must also ensure that personal information contained in the register is handled appropriately.

For opposition parties, access to reliable electoral information is an important part of ensuring that the election is conducted fairly. The commission’s response to the demand could therefore become another issue in the broader debate over public confidence in Nigeria’s electoral institutions.

As the January election approaches, attention will remain on whether INEC publishes the register for wider scrutiny, how it handles corrections and whether outstanding concerns are resolved before voting begins.
