President Bola Tinubu has directed security agencies to intensify investigations into the killing of prominent Islamic preacher Sheikh Yahaya Ibrahim Masussuka and his friend, Adamu Abubakar, in Dutsin-Ma, Katsina State.
The two men were reportedly shot dead by gunmen riding a motorcycle outside the cleric’s residence on Monday evening, October 26. The incident has raised fresh concerns about security in north-western Nigeria, where armed groups have carried out attacks, kidnappings and killings.
In a statement released on Tuesday, the Presidency said Tinubu had instructed the Nigeria Police Force and other relevant security agencies to identify, apprehend and prosecute those responsible for the killings. The President also extended his condolences to the victims’ families, followers and the people of Katsina State.
The Katsina State Police Command confirmed that officers responded to the incident and that the victims were taken to a nearby hospital, where they were pronounced dead. Police Commissioner Ali Umar Fage subsequently ordered the deployment of tactical and operational teams to track down the attackers.
The investigation has taken on additional significance following reports that the militant group Ansaru claimed responsibility for the attack in a video circulated after the killings. The group reportedly cited the cleric’s religious positions and advocacy for peaceful coexistence among people of different faiths as reasons for targeting him.
However, the claim has not been independently verified, and police have not publicly confirmed Ansaru’s involvement. Investigators will need to establish the circumstances surrounding the shooting and determine who carried it out.
The killing has renewed attention on the security challenges facing Katsina and neighbouring states, where authorities continue to confront armed violence affecting communities, religious leaders and local livelihoods.
The Federal Government’s response will now be measured by the progress of the investigation, the identification of suspects and whether those responsible are brought before the courts.
