Nigeria’s Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has launched an investigation into suspicious photographs, including images suspected to have been generated using artificial intelligence, found in the preliminary register of voters ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The investigation follows public concerns after INEC published the preliminary voter register on its website on October 26. Nigerians raised questions about photographs appearing alongside voter records, prompting renewed scrutiny of the accuracy and integrity of the electoral database.
In a statement issued on October 27, Mohammed Kudu Haruna, chairman of INEC’s Information and Voter Education Committee, explained that the online register was the same preliminary version displayed physically at registration areas nationwide between October 9 and 15.
According to the commission, questionable registration records had already been identified and flagged during the physical display exercise. INEC said it had begun reviewing the affected records and taking corrective action under established procedures.
The electoral body also clarified that the online publication did not reflect all ongoing data-cleaning activities. It emphasised that the register currently available to the public is preliminary and should not be mistaken for the final certified voter register.
INEC is investigating how the suspicious photographs entered the system, including whether technical or procedural lapses occurred during voter registration and data processing. The commission said appropriate action would follow once the findings had been verified.
The issue is significant because the accuracy of the voter register is central to public confidence in elections. Incorrect information or irregular entries could undermine trust in the electoral process if they are not properly investigated and resolved.
INEC said verification, adjudication and data-cleaning procedures would be completed before the final register is certified on December 15, 2026. It also encouraged citizens and stakeholders to continue reporting suspected irregularities through the appropriate channels.
The investigation comes as preparations for Nigeria’s 2027 general elections continue, placing renewed attention on electoral transparency, reliable voter records and the commission’s ability to address concerns before voting begins.
