Nigerian Stock Market Loses ₦1.46 Trillion as Banking and Cement Shares Fall

Nigeria’s equities market lost approximately ₦1.46 trillion in market value on Monday as selling pressure on major banking and cement stocks pushed the Nigerian Exchange (NGX) All-Share Index lower.

The index declined by 0.91 per cent to close at 245,278.34 points, while the market’s total capitalisation fell to ₦159.26 trillion from approximately ₦160.72 trillion in the previous trading session.

The decline reversed part of the market’s recent gains and reduced its year-to-date return from 59.07 per cent to 57.62 per cent, according to a report published by Daily Times Nigeria on October 20, 2026. citeturn805397search2

    Dangote Cement, Banks Lead Decline

Dangote Cement was among the major stocks that weighed on market performance, recording a 5.50 per cent decline. Shares of Zenith Bank and Guaranty Trust Holding Company also fell, losing 1.59 per cent and 1.44 per cent, respectively.

The declines in these heavyweight stocks contributed to the broader market downturn, highlighting how movements in a relatively small number of influential companies can affect overall market performance.

Investors may sell shares for several reasons, including profit-taking after substantial price increases, changes in expectations about corporate earnings and adjustments to investment portfolios. However, the reported market figures alone do not establish the specific reasons behind each investor’s decision.

    Investors Monitor Market Direction

Despite Monday’s decline, the NGX remained significantly higher for the year, with its year-to-date return standing at 57.62 per cent at the close of trading.

The latest session therefore represents a setback within a market that had recorded substantial gains earlier in 2026. Whether the decline develops into a broader correction or is followed by renewed buying interest will depend on subsequent trading activity and investor sentiment.

Market participants will continue monitoring the performance of major listed companies, corporate earnings, interest-rate conditions and developments in Nigeria’s wider economy.

For investors, the session highlights the importance of assessing individual companies and investment risks rather than relying solely on headline market gains. Daily price movements can be significant, particularly when major stocks experience simultaneous declines.

The coming trading sessions will provide further evidence of whether investors are continuing to reduce their exposure to equities or returning to the market after the latest sell-off.
