Nigeria’s U-17 women’s national team, the Flamingos, revived their hopes of progressing at the 2026 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup after defeating Puerto Rico 2–0 in their second group-stage match in Morocco.
The victory on Tuesday, October 20, gave Nigeria its first points of the tournament following a 2–1 defeat to Poland in the opening match. Goals from Oluwakemi Adegbuyi and Precious Oscar secured the important win, giving the Nigerian youngsters renewed confidence as they continued their campaign.
The Flamingos entered the encounter knowing that another disappointing result could make their route to the knockout stage considerably more difficult. They responded by producing a more effective performance, converting their opportunities and keeping Puerto Rico from scoring.
Adegbuyi’s goal helped Nigeria establish an advantage, while Oscar also found the net to complete the 2–0 victory. The result provided a timely boost for the team after its opening defeat and demonstrated the players’ ability to respond under pressure.
Despite the win, Nigeria’s qualification hopes still depended on the remaining group-stage results and the team’s final position in the standings. The players and coaching staff therefore needed to maintain their concentration rather than rely solely on the victory over Puerto Rico.
Coach Akeem Busari had also called for improvement following the team’s opening match against Poland. The performance against Puerto Rico offered encouraging signs, although consistency remained important as the competition progressed.
The tournament provides a major platform for young Nigerian players to gain international experience and demonstrate their abilities against some of the strongest youth teams in women’s football. Strong performances could also help players attract attention from clubs and strengthen the future of Nigeria’s women’s national teams.
For Nigerian supporters, the victory represented a welcome response to the opening setback. The Flamingos will now look to build on their improved performance and secure the results needed to advance beyond the group stage.
