Flamingos Beat Ghana 4-2 to Maintain Winning Start at WAFU BNigeria’s Flamingos continued their winning start to the 2026 WAFU B U-17 Girls’ Cup with a 4-2 victory over Ghana’s Black Maidens in a six-goal encounter on Friday.
The victory was Nigeria’s second consecutive win in the regional competition, following their emphatic 5-0 victory over Niger Republic in their opening match. The Flamingos have now scored nine goals in their first two games.
Nigeria took control of the match in the first half, with Oluwakemi Adegbuyi opening the scoring in the 33rd minute. The forward found the net to give the Flamingos a deserved advantage.
Captain Harmony Chidi then doubled Nigeria’s lead in first-half stoppage time, sending her team into the break with a 2-0 advantage.
The match took a different turn shortly after the restart when Nigeria were reduced to 10 players. Elizabeth Adesuyi was shown a red card in the 59th minute, leaving the Flamingos to play the final stages of the match with a numerical disadvantage.
Ghana quickly took advantage of the situation. Captain Seidatu Wahab pulled a goal back in the 62nd minute, reducing the deficit to 2-1 and giving the Black Maidens renewed hope.
Nigeria, however, responded strongly despite being a player down. Mary Dunstan restored the Flamingos’ two-goal advantage in the 70th minute after capitalising on an error in the Ghanaian defence to make it 3-1.
The Flamingos continued to create opportunities and eventually extended their lead again in the 87th minute. Kaosarat Akanji scored Nigeria’s fourth goal, putting the game beyond Ghana’s immediate reach.Ghana managed to score a second goal through Gloria Ameaa in the 90th minute, but the late effort was not enough to change the outcome.
Nigeria held on to secure a 4-2 victory despite playing for more than 30 minutes with 10 players.The result maintains the Flamingos’ perfect start to the tournament and continues their strong attacking form.
Their opening two matches have produced 14 goals in total, with Nigeria scoring nine and conceding two.The 2026 WAFU B U-17 Girls’ Cup is also serving as preparation for Nigeria ahead of the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup in Morocco.
The Flamingos will now turn their attention to their remaining fixtures as they continue their campaign in Côte d’Ivoire.
