ByteDance, Alibaba and Tencent Place Orders Worth Over $35 Billion for Nvidia AI Chips

Three of China’s biggest technology companies have reportedly placed orders worth more than $35 billion for Nvidia graphics processing units, highlighting the growing demand for computing hardware needed to power artificial intelligence applications.

According to a Dikkasmedia report published on October 20, 2026, ByteDance, Alibaba and Tencent have collectively ordered more than three million Nvidia RTX PRO 5500 graphics cards. The orders reflect the companies’ efforts to secure powerful processors for AI workloads despite restrictions on China’s access to some of the most advanced American semiconductor technologies.

The Nvidia RTX PRO 5500 is a professional workstation graphics card designed for demanding computing tasks. Although it is not intended to replace the most powerful processors used in large-scale AI data centres, it offers substantial computing capabilities for applications such as AI inference, software development, graphics processing and professional design.

The reported orders demonstrate how Chinese technology companies are adapting their hardware strategies in response to restrictions on advanced chip exports. With some higher-performance Nvidia products subject to tighter controls, businesses are seeking alternatives that can legally be supplied to the Chinese market.

However, securing the hardware may prove difficult. Dikkasmedia reported that Nvidia had warned customers and partners it could not guarantee fulfilment of all the orders because demand from Chinese technology companies significantly exceeds planned production capacity. Sources cited in the report indicated that demand in China could surpass six million cards.

Nvidia is expected to produce no more than three million of the RTX PRO 5500 cards globally in 2027, according to the report. The company must also balance demand from different markets while prioritising newer computing platforms designed for increasingly demanding AI workloads.

The situation highlights the growing importance of semiconductor supply chains in the global technology industry. As companies race to develop AI assistants, automated business tools and other intelligent applications, access to computing power has become a major competitive advantage.

For Nvidia, the reported demand presents a significant commercial opportunity, although production constraints could limit how much revenue the company can generate from the orders. For Chinese technology firms, obtaining sufficient processors will be crucial to maintaining investment in AI development.

The development also illustrates how international trade restrictions are reshaping the global semiconductor market, forcing companies to adjust their technology choices while governments continue to compete for leadership in artificial intelligence.
