Brentford Beat Chelsea 3-0 to Move Third in Premier LeagueBrentford produced a stunning second-half performance to defeat Chelsea 3-0 in Friday’s Premier League clash at the Gtech Community Stadium, extending their unbeaten start to the league season.
The two sides were level at half-time, but Brentford took control after the break and eventually secured a convincing victory through goals from Jaidon Anthony, Igor Thiago and Fábio Carvalho. Chelsea had opportunities during the opening period, with Pedro Neto testing Brentford goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher early on. Cole Palmer also attempted to find a way through the home defence, but the visitors were unable to turn their possession into a goal.
Brentford increased the pressure after the restart and eventually broke the deadlock in the 61st minute. Jaidon Anthony headed home from close range after Jannik Schuster helped the ball back across the Chelsea goal from a corner.
Chelsea struggled to respond, while Brentford grew increasingly confident.
The hosts doubled their advantage in the 83rd minute. Emiliano Martínez saved Kevin Schade’s initial effort during a Brentford counter-attack, but the rebound fell to Igor Thiago, who made no mistake from the follow-up.
Fábio Carvalho completed the scoring deep into stoppage time, turning in Schade’s cross to seal Brentford’s biggest moment of the match.
The result moved Brentford up to third place in the Premier League table, while Chelsea remained seventh after suffering their third consecutive league match without a victory. Chelsea have also now gone 21 league matches without keeping a clean sheet. The victory was particularly significant for Brentford because it was their first home Premier League win over Chelsea since 1938.
For Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso, the defeat highlighted continued defensive problems. The Blues had conceded heavily in their opening matches and were unable to find a response after Brentford took the lead.
Brentford, meanwhile, maintained their unbeaten league record and will take confidence from a result that combined defensive discipline with an impressive second-half attacking display.
Premier League action continues on Saturday, with Tottenham facing Aston Villa and Arsenal travelling to Brighton among the fixtures.
