AMD Becomes Latest Chipmaker to Reach $1 Trillion Valuation

Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) has surpassed a $1 trillion market valuation for the first time, as growing demand for artificial intelligence chips continues to drive investor interest in the semiconductor industry.

AMD shares climbed 9.6 per cent to a record $613.31 on Monday, pushing the company into the group of chipmakers valued at more than $1 trillion. The development puts AMD alongside major semiconductor companies including Nvidia, Broadcom and Micron.

The rise reflects growing expectations around AMD’s role in the rapidly expanding AI computing market. The company has been increasing its focus beyond traditional processors and is developing a broader range of hardware designed for AI workloads.

AMD has been competing with Nvidia in the market for data-centre AI computing, while also maintaining a major position in server processors. Its expansion into complete AI computing systems is intended to strengthen its ability to compete for business from companies building large-scale AI infrastructure.

AMD’s shares have risen sharply during 2026, with Reuters reporting that the stock had gained about 185 per cent for the year by Monday. The company’s performance has significantly outpaced the broader Nasdaq index over the same period.

The milestone comes as technology companies around the world continue investing heavily in artificial intelligence. Demand for powerful processors and accelerators has increased as businesses build data centres capable of training and running increasingly sophisticated AI models.

However, the semiconductor industry also faces challenges, including the need for sufficient manufacturing capacity, advanced memory and packaging infrastructure. The ability of chipmakers to meet rapidly growing AI demand will depend partly on their supply chains.

AMD’s move into the trillion-dollar valuation group highlights how central semiconductor technology has become to the current AI expansion. As companies continue developing more capable AI systems, competition among chip manufacturers is expected to remain intense.

For consumers, the impact may eventually extend beyond data centres, as advances in AI hardware can contribute to faster computers, smarter devices and new AI-powered applications.
