Artificial intelligence company Anthropic is considering the release of a new AI model as it responds to growing competition from OpenAI, according to people familiar with the company’s plans.
The potential launch comes after OpenAI released GPT-6 Astra earlier this month. The new OpenAI model has reportedly gained traction among business users, increasing competitive pressure on Anthropic as the two companies continue to compete in the rapidly expanding enterprise artificial intelligence market.
Reuters reported on September 19 that Anthropic is evaluating the timing of a possible new model release. The discussions are also taking place as the company prepares for a potential initial public offering and considers how to balance investment in new AI systems with profitability and safety.
Anthropic Chief Executive Dario Amodei recently called for the AI industry to slow the pace of developing increasingly powerful models, arguing that stronger safety measures and coordination are needed as AI capabilities advance.
The company’s consideration of a new model therefore comes against a backdrop of competing priorities. Anthropic is seeking to remain competitive in the AI market while continuing to emphasise safety in the development of its technology.
OpenAI’s GPT-6 Astra has reportedly made rapid progress in enterprise adoption. Data from corporate expense platform Ramp cited by Reuters showed that Astra represented about 13% of tracked enterprise AI spending, compared with about 8% for Anthropic’s Claude Fable.
OpenAI has also gained momentum on OpenRouter, a platform that routes developer traffic between AI models. OpenRouter said users spent more on OpenAI models than Anthropic models during the previous week, marking the first time OpenAI had led that measure in more than two years.
Despite the competitive pressure, Anthropic continues to report strong growth. Reuters said the company’s annualised revenue run rate exceeded $65 billion by the end of July, compared with approximately $9 billion at the end of 2025.
Anthropic has not publicly confirmed whether or when it will release another model.
The situation illustrates the intense competition among leading AI companies, with firms attempting to improve model capabilities while also dealing with the costs of development, safety concerns and growing expectations from investors and enterprise customers.
