Flamingos Target First World Cup Victory Against Puerto Rico

Nigeria’s U-17 women’s national team, the Flamingos, are seeking their first victory at the 2026 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup as they prepare to face Puerto Rico in their second Group B fixture in Morocco on Tuesday, October 20.

The match presents an important opportunity for Nigeria to recover from their opening 2-1 defeat to Poland and improve their chances of advancing to the Round of 16. Puerto Rico are also looking for their first points after suffering a 6-0 loss to Korea DPR in their opening match.

Nigeria Seek Response After Opening Defeat

Head coach Akeem Busari and his players will be eager to turn their attacking opportunities into goals after their disappointing start against Poland.

Nigeria conceded first when Wiktoria Skrzypczak converted a penalty in the 33rd minute. Natalia Skrok extended Poland’s advantage in the 65th minute before Oluebube Umejiaku pulled one back for the Flamingos in the 79th minute following an attacking move initiated by substitute Kanyinsola Yusuf.

Despite the late goal, Nigeria could not find an equaliser, leaving the team under pressure to secure a positive result in its next fixture.

Against Puerto Rico, the Flamingos will need to improve their finishing, maintain defensive discipline and take advantage of scoring opportunities. A victory would provide a confidence boost and keep their qualification hopes on course.

    Puerto Rico Also Under Pressure

Puerto Rico enter the contest following a heavy defeat against Korea DPR. The tournament marks the island nation’s first appearance at a FIFA World Cup at any level.

The team qualified after finishing as the best-ranked runner-up in the final round of the 2026 Concacaf Women’s U-17 Qualifiers. Before the tournament, Puerto Rico recorded victories over Haiti and Bermuda, demonstrating their ability to compete during regional qualification.

However, their opening loss exposed defensive weaknesses that Nigeria may attempt to exploit.

Puerto Rico will also be motivated to earn their first points and record a historic victory on the global stage, meaning Nigeria cannot afford to underestimate their opponents.

Round of 16 Qualification at Stake

Under the tournament format, the top two teams in each group qualify automatically for the Round of 16, while four of the best third-placed teams across the six groups also progress.

With Korea DPR having made a strong start in Group B, the result against Puerto Rico could prove significant for Nigeria’s knockout-stage ambitions.

The Flamingos must combine attacking confidence with defensive organisation if they are to secure the three points. A win would strengthen their position before their final group fixture, while another defeat would make qualification considerably more difficult.

For Nigeria, Tuesday’s encounter is an opportunity to demonstrate resilience and keep their World Cup campaign alive.
