One Hit Movie Doesn’t Guarantee Success — Tierny Olalere

Nollywood actress and filmmaker Tierny Olalere has said that starring in a successful movie does not automatically guarantee a lasting career in the Nigerian film industry.

Olalere made the remarks while reflecting on her experiences in Nollywood, noting that a breakthrough project can provide an actor with significant visibility but does not necessarily translate into long-term success.

According to the actress, she learned that lesson through experience. She explained that achieving sudden popularity from a viral project or hit movie can create opportunities, but maintaining a career requires continuous effort, discipline and strategic planning.

Olalere said actors should not become overly comfortable after receiving public recognition from a successful project. She stressed that the entertainment industry is constantly changing and professionals need to continue developing themselves and pursuing new opportunities.

She also noted that actors need to treat their careers as businesses rather than relying entirely on previous achievements. In her view, maintaining relevance requires constantly reinventing oneself and building a sustainable professional structure.

Olalere further argued that talent alone is no longer enough to guarantee success in Nollywood. While she described talent as an important starting point, she said professional relationships and strategic networking have become increasingly important in helping actors access opportunities.

She explained that relationships with directors, producers, casting agents and other industry professionals can influence whether an actor is considered for future projects. Without visibility within the industry, she said, even talented performers may struggle to find opportunities.

The actress also spoke about maintaining personal values while pursuing a career. She said she had not compromised her core principles in order to advance professionally and maintained that success should not come at the expense of personal integrity.

Olalere’s comments highlight the increasingly competitive nature of Nigeria’s entertainment industry, where viral success can quickly generate attention but sustaining a career requires consistency, professional relationships and continued development.

Her message is that actors should view every successful project as another step in their careers rather than as the final destination.
